Donna and Howard Stone

Donna and Howard Stone have been mainstay supporters of the MCA since the early 1990s and their donation of more than 90 works to the MCA stand as a testament to their generosity.
As a young couple living in the Northern suburbs, the Stones gave many emerging Chicago artists their first purchases. After relocating to Chicago, they amassed a remarkable collection of significant international artists, one that they have shared with Chicago's cultural institutions. Most notably, in 2002 they gave 76 photographs to the MCA, significantly expanding our holdings of important contemporary photographers. In fact, almost every iteration of our collection exhibitions features works given by the Stones. In the case of Surrealism: The Conjured Life, their giving is represented by three remarkable Francesca Woodman photographs, which they acquired before Woodman had gained acclaim.
Howard passed away on November 5, 2015, and we are saddened to lose such a vital supporter of the arts in Chicago. His wonderful, broad smile will be missed.

- Long A film still of a teenage girl with long, blonde hair and brown eyes. She is laying down, her head propped up by two pillows with different covers. The still cuts off at her collarbone and you only see her left shoulder. Her gaze is soft and directed to the side of the frame.

- Long A girl with long brown hair, light skin, and a band-aid over her belly-button stands on a shore looking past the camera taking the picture. She stands in the center of the image on a seaweed strewn beach below a blue sky and a deep blue ocean. She stands weight on her hip, a modelesque pose, but awkwardly as she is just a child. Her arms dangle at her sides and the wind blows strands of her hair to the right. The white crest of a small wave hits the shore just behind her skinny knees.

- Long A black-and-white close-up shows two hands clasped around a 1940s-style microphone. The left hand is covered in an indiscernible script except for the dorsum of the hand where the text breaks to form a four-petaled shape.
- Lorna Simpson, Flipside, 1991
- Long A pair of black-and-white photographs with matching black frames and solid black backgrounds capture a portrait of a woman with short, kinky, black hair from behind and a wooden mask from behind with a carved chin-length wig that curls at the ends and comes to a point at the top. Centered below is a black label with white text that reads "the neighbors were suspicious of her hairstyle."
