Out of Place: Contemporary Art and the Architectural Uncanny

Out of Place: Contemporary Art and the Architectural Uncanny presents 14 international artists working in various media to make familiar interior and exterior spaces unfamiliar and unsettling. The work in the exhibition demonstrates how ordinary places can become strange and threatening and how this condition alludes to larger social issues of place and displacement. Artists featured in the exhibition include: Miriam Bäckström, Johanna Bresnick , Monica Bonvicini, Miles Coolidge, Sam Durant, Julia Fish, Teresa Hubbard and Alexander Birchler, Tom Hunter, Doug Ischar, Joachim Koester, Paul Pfeiffer, and Jane and Louise Wilson.

This exhibition is organized by MCA Associate Curator Dominic Molon.

This exhibition is generously supported by the LEF Foundation, C. Bradford Smith and Donald L. Davis, Debra and Dennis Scholl, and the Stoll Foundation.

With the launch of this website, the MCA has created a platform for archiving and publishing images and stories from our 50-year history. Though many exhibition pages currently lack descriptions or illustrations, we’re committed to a program of ongoing research that will fill in the blanks over time. If you have information about past MCA exhibitions to share, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
