In a dark room, a large mound of sand forms several cone shapes, while a small light projection in the background shows an abstract, vaporous shape that resembles a planet.

blog intro

Last Thursday, we invited around 700 avid Instagrammers to have the museum all to themselves for an evening of photography and inspiration. The exhibitions and especially the immersive, large-scale video installations in Diana Thater: The Sympathetic Imagination fueled the photographers imagination and as usual we were blown away by the new perspectives they showed us and the creativity in their photos. We’ve seen over 550 photos (and counting) on #emptyMCA in Instagram, with a few of the highlights here.

A special thanks is due to our partners, IGers Chicago, the JJ Community, the Re Up, and Wax Paper who helped to get the word out. The response from the community was above and beyond what we expected and we were thrilled when we had to raise the attendance cap twice before closing out the event. We’re already looking forward to next year!
